Okay, where’d the month go?

Can’t believe it’s nearing the end of the month.  I mean, wasn’t it just Memorial Day like, 4 days ago?

Yeah, needless to say the writing has stalled some.  No good reason to start with, then last week went down the tubes.   My Grandfather is in the hospital and it’s the best place for him.  Someplace he should have been oh, a month ago at least but I’m not going to go into that here.  He’s doing well now which is wonderful.  However it’s upset the routine around here and involved a lot of family conversations about his future so I’ve been good and distracted.

The stress of this (and some other stuff) has me cleaning even more than before.  I have a sudden urge to reduce as much clutter as possible.  I mean, I’m sentimental and all, but why am I still holding onto 7 volumes of The Black Stallion series when I’ve maybe read one?  I’ve had these books for . . . 30 years.  Okay, that hurt to type.  But I am holding on to the Little House on the Prairie set I have.  Nope, not letting go of those until I can by them electronically.  I’ve had these longer than the Black Stallion books.   The next pile to be attacked is my quilting books.  I know I have a few books that were bought for ONE pattern.  So, I’m going to photocopy that pattern and toss the book in the donation bin.  Oh and don’t get on my about copyright blah blah blah.

What else?  Not much.  I’m proud of myself for not obsessively checking email.  I sent another email to a story source, just a check in make sure he’s still interested in helping me.  I did that on Sunday and I’m not fussing about it.  One small step.  Yeah I need to get back to the writing.  Life is starting to get back to what is “normal” around here so hopefully I’ll be making progress again soon.

A little Spring cleaning

My Spring cleaning fit seems to be coming in small waves this year.  I just went through my box o’ electronic crap and tossed power cords to things I no longer own.  There were audio cables that went to . . . who the hell knows.  There’s the charger for my first mp3 player that’s well leaking (yeah I really need to dispose of this soon).

I sorted clothing patterns and odd scrap of garment fabric about three weeks ago, tossed a big bag of that.  Did you know that NO ONE takes clothing patterns as a donation?  Yeah, I called around to some schools and community groups and you’d think I’d asked them to take the rotting corpse of squirrel or something the way they reacted.

I’ve decided my birthday present this year is going to be a big o’ box of ebooks.  Yeah, funny huh?  Anyway I’ve gone through my to be read pile (non Harlequin books) and sorted them out by which were available via ebooks.  Those are set aside and will be sent off to the library once they start taking donations again.  The big used book sale is this weekend.  First time in a couple of years I haven’t gone, but I didn’t even think about it until sometime late yesterday.  The biggest thing I was always looking for were old Harlequin Blazes.  Most of the back list is available digitally now so eventually my stockpile will be replaced.  Eventually I’ll have the entire catalog of Blazes on my eReader.

How’s the writing going you ask?  Heh.  I’ve stalled a little, mostly because of the distractions of the “oh shiny” whatever it is at the moment.  Later, once it cools off a little I’ll dive back into the work and try to make a dent in my weekly page goal.

Checking in on day 9

I’m plugging away.   Mostly.  I fell away for the last day and a half and as I’ve been trying to get back into it I figured out why.  I’ve hit that point in my manuscript where my research wasn’t right.  Actually I hadn’t done an ounce of research when I started this story way back . . . in November 2008.  Yup, this was my NaNoWriMo story.  I just dove in and wrote.  Then I did some research.

What’s the problem?

Yeah, a large part of this story takes place during rehearsals for an off-Broadway play.  I had most of the scenes occurring in the theatre, except early rehearsals aren’t in the theatre usually.  So I’ve had to move scenes to a rehearsal space which changes the stage direction of these scenes.  It’s slower work that I’d thought and expected.   I’m at the point now where I’ve also had to break scenes and well . . . it’s just more work than I thought.  Most of this re-write was supposed to be filling in and expanding the word count.

No, I’m not going to rant about that, at least not today.   Actually I’m about 500 words from 20,000 words and I’m at 118 pages so it’s all good over here.

I’m thinking about what my weekly reward is going to be.  Yeah, I’ve decided I doing the reward system.  At the end of the first week I treated myself to the latest Shannon McKenna book (an auto buy for me).  I have something in mind, but I’m not sure . . . it’s a reward of a different sort.  Yup, I’m being mysterious again.

Okay, I’m tired.  I’m going to dig up a book and read a little before bed.

Week 1 report

One  week in and this challenge is coming along nicely.  I’ve been writing every day, well except for yesterday I took off as a crafting day.

I’ve decided upon a weekly goal, one that doesn’t depend on word count or new pages.  I want the new manuscript to grow 100 pages every week.  Four weeks, four hundred pages.  If I do this (and I have every expectation of doing it) it means I’ll have doubled my manuscript in a month.  I’ll feel so much better about this project when it’s closer to 400 pages instead of 200 pages.

Not much else to report in really.  It’s gotten cold, which wouldn’t be so annoying if it hadn’t been so damned warm and muggy yesterday.  I’d hoped to write a little in the evening, but what little time I spent outside pulled all the energy right out of me.  So I curled up with a couple of movies instead.

That’s about it, I’m off to get started on my writing for the day.

Reporting in

Yesterday being the 1st and all I started the #mynoedmo challenge with Jean (see previous post for linky I’m lazy today).  I was a good girl.  I pulled out my most finished manuscript, “On The Way Down” and started reading.  I’d done 65 pages previously so it wasn’t a long read.  Once that was done the Younger Miss Bennett’s started chattering and away we went.  I’ve had a new scene come to me and am happily working away.  I even did a little happy dance via Twitter about the 1,000 words I wrote.  Then it hit me.  I have no real clue what my word count is.  I’m reworking an existing draft.  The best I can do (and that’s not even perfect) is to compare page counts.  The reason that’s not a perfect comparison?  The existing draft doesn’t have page breaks after each scene like the new one.

So, new day and new plan.  I’m going to just keep working away and not worry about this.  Yeah, I know, you are more than free to laugh at me about this.  I suspect sometime, either here or elsewhere I’ll start bitchin about how my word count doesn’t match my page count.  Yes, it bores even me but I still fuss about it and probably always will.

I think that’s it for the day.  I’ve got story spinning in my head, the playlist playing and I’m about to dive back in for the day.

Oh one more thing.  The contest I entered?  I didn’t make the first round.  Oh well.  This manuscript isn’t really ready for that kind of read anyway.  Next time.
