Checking in on day 9

I’m plugging away.   Mostly.  I fell away for the last day and a half and as I’ve been trying to get back into it I figured out why.  I’ve hit that point in my manuscript where my research wasn’t right.  Actually I hadn’t done an ounce of research when I started this story way back . . . in November 2008.  Yup, this was my NaNoWriMo story.  I just dove in and wrote.  Then I did some research.

What’s the problem?

Yeah, a large part of this story takes place during rehearsals for an off-Broadway play.  I had most of the scenes occurring in the theatre, except early rehearsals aren’t in the theatre usually.  So I’ve had to move scenes to a rehearsal space which changes the stage direction of these scenes.  It’s slower work that I’d thought and expected.   I’m at the point now where I’ve also had to break scenes and well . . . it’s just more work than I thought.  Most of this re-write was supposed to be filling in and expanding the word count.

No, I’m not going to rant about that, at least not today.   Actually I’m about 500 words from 20,000 words and I’m at 118 pages so it’s all good over here.

I’m thinking about what my weekly reward is going to be.  Yeah, I’ve decided I doing the reward system.  At the end of the first week I treated myself to the latest Shannon McKenna book (an auto buy for me).  I have something in mind, but I’m not sure . . . it’s a reward of a different sort.  Yup, I’m being mysterious again.

Okay, I’m tired.  I’m going to dig up a book and read a little before bed.

  1. Hmm, I like the idea of a reward system. Though I guess last weekend I did reward myself with extra sleep and a lazy day watching movies.

Keep plugging along. We’re both already a lot closer to the finish than when we started.

  2. Yes, every day that we work a little puts us a little closer to the goal. My “reward” system may be a little silly but it gives me something to work toward every week.

  3. Reward systems aren’t silly!!! If it motivates you–anything from a single M&M to an expensive purse, then use it! I’m a frequent user of stickers and gold stars and let me tell you, they inspire me something fierce! At the end of my first book, it was ice cream and a fun topping, but it was some of the best ice cream I ever had, so yes, use the reward system if it works for you!

And go you with the writing!!!

  4. Okay, rewards in general are not silly. They don’t always work for me, but they’re not silly in principle. What’s silly is this reward. If I hit my page count (which is 180) then I’ll send an email. Yup, sending an email to a source for another story is the reward for this week’s work. Actually I’m using it as a reward as way to keep from being a pest to someone I’m thrilled to be in contact with in the first place.
