A quick check in

I just wanted to drop in with a quick hello, especially since I’ve been challenged to post more (waves at Kim).  I definitely have story talking to me plenty, I just need to get down to the actual writing part which I seem to be easily distracted from.  I sorted out a couple of story points last night regarding dual passports, which is a tiny point in the story but such a wonderful part of the story (if I do say so myself) and I’m thrilled to know it’s plausible.

What else?  Not much.  I’ve been crafting a lot, trying to get to the bottom of piles and have a little less stuff sitting around here collecting dust.  I’ve also been reading through what’s left of my physical to-be-read pile.  I got a gorgeous red Sony ereader last Christmas but I’ve resisting much on it until I got a handle on the piles around here.  Notice it’s taken a year but it’s done, mostly.  I have a huge pile of Harlequins that I bought at various used bookstores for pennies that I’m thinking of actually buying retail and putting on the ereader.  I mean, I didn’t feel bad buying 4 and 5 year old Harlequins at book sales because they were virtually impossible to find anywhere else, but the glories of the digital age means I can buy them and actually support the authors.

Not much else right now beyond my overwhelming desire to have Spring.  NOW.  Did I mention it’s snowing as I write this?

And once again the speller checker has me laughing.  It’s flagged “red” as a misspelling.  It thinks I mean “read.”  I’m off to work on something.

Happy New Year!

I know I know, it’s been a while but I wanted to drop a quick new post just to let everyone (is anyone still reading) know I’ll be back to a more regular blogging schedule soon.  Hopefully once I’ve shaken this holiday cold.  I don’t remember asking for a cold for Christmas but hey, look what I got anyway.

It’s been a rough last 6 months.  I lost way too many members of my family.  One is too many 4 is obscene.  2011 will be a better year.  If I didn’t already believe it my horoscope says so.  😉

Hope the rest of you have a wonderful weekend and I promise, watch this space as I’ll be around more this year.

new month, fresh start

I’ve been meaning to do this for a couple days but well, I got distracted.  First by my new sewing machine – love the new shiny.  The second distraction has been the weather.  Summer roared back here.  The heat index yesterday was 97, today it’s only 93.  Yeah.

So the September challenge.  My plan is to have 200 pages finished by the end of the month.  Of course I’ve yet to write a word.  No, that’s not true.  I eeked out a page or two the other night, but I was obviously starting in the wrong place and it was a fight to get into story.  I have a better plan that once the heat stops frying my brain I’ll start.  It’s obvious the Younger Miss Bennetts are ready to work as they’ve been running the playlist through my head for the last 2 days.  Subtle they are not.

That’s it.  A small update on the first of the month with a promise to post more as the month goes on.

A new challenge

It’s nearly the beginning of a new month and it’s a wonderful time to start a new writing challenge so that’s what I’m going to do.  Of course I’m not doing this challenge alone.  I’ve got Kim along for the ride and well, personally I don’t care who else joins in.  The plan?  To get some writing done.  If  nothing else it will be good warm up for NaNo in November (God are we that close to November already?).

My specific goal?  Don’t completely have one.  Oh wait!  Yes I do.  By the end of the month I want to have nearly 200 pages on this current project “Blood Brothers.”  If I could pull together 35 pages in about a week with the previous version of this story then 200 pages in a month shouldn’t be a seriously long haul.  I’ll be checking in regularly here.  And please, if I don’t someone ping me via Twitter of Facebook to keep my honest.  I have to keep this place up to date.  I’ll also be checking in on Friday’s over at the Wiffer forums on my progress.

That’s my short update for today, expect more ramblings to come.  Okay, now it’s Kim’s turn to blog.

Never mock the girls

Yup, the lesson of this week has been to never mock the Younger Miss Bennetts.  Ever.

See, in my last post I poked fun at their need for pink paper before they would give me any details on a fluffy romance idea from like 2 1/2 years ago.   We both have long memories and apparently they loved the paper so much they were wounded.  So what did they do?  They handed me a brand spanking new story idea that less than 24 hours later is nearly full formed.  I’d be writing it right now if my characters had names.  Yeah, that’s not new for me so I’m not terribly worried.  I think I wrote something like 20 pages of a story once with just he/she tags because I didn’t have names.

This new idea is wonderful and I’ve spent the day turning it around, trying to find out which direction is best.  I think I have it.  I’ve also noticed a trend in my stories of late.  Reunions.  “Redemption” is a reunion story.  “On the Way Down” is a reunion story.  So I’m right on target.   The hero is a little different in this one, but I like it.  So, off to see if I can pull some character names out of the book.

How did everyone else’s weekend go?

At least it’s not pink paper

So the younger Miss Bennett’s are at it again.

I downloaded “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence & The Machine about a week ago.  Don’t know the song?  Have you see the commercial for “Covert Affairs” on USA?  Then you’ve heard the song.  After seeing the commercial about six times in less than an hour I went hunting for the music.  I let it repeat a couple times the night I purchased it but haven’t really listened to it, until tonight.  Seems it’s a perfect match for the story I’ve been neglecting all month.  Almost to a T.  Now this wouldn’t be a problem, if it were oh, say, noon but it’s 12:13am.  I’m tired, for the first time in two weeks easily I’m tired.  Could have something to do with the reading I’ve been doing as that usually tires me out.

I wouldn’t have even figured this out if I hadn’t of gotten back on the computer to answer one email and send out another.  I figured I was up and well, I needed to not hear the neighbours dogs for a couple minutes so I plugged into the iPod.  Yeah, now I’ve got story running through my very sleepy mind.  Oh.  Joy.

So that’s my life tonight.  The rest?  Not worth rehashing really.  Too much family drama that isn’t worth the first blush of energy I’ve given it, let alone a second blush.  I promise you guys one thing though, I’ll be back soon.  This is one habit I need to get back to seriously.

Okay, where’d the month go?

Can’t believe it’s nearing the end of the month.  I mean, wasn’t it just Memorial Day like, 4 days ago?

Yeah, needless to say the writing has stalled some.  No good reason to start with, then last week went down the tubes.   My Grandfather is in the hospital and it’s the best place for him.  Someplace he should have been oh, a month ago at least but I’m not going to go into that here.  He’s doing well now which is wonderful.  However it’s upset the routine around here and involved a lot of family conversations about his future so I’ve been good and distracted.

The stress of this (and some other stuff) has me cleaning even more than before.  I have a sudden urge to reduce as much clutter as possible.  I mean, I’m sentimental and all, but why am I still holding onto 7 volumes of The Black Stallion series when I’ve maybe read one?  I’ve had these books for . . . 30 years.  Okay, that hurt to type.  But I am holding on to the Little House on the Prairie set I have.  Nope, not letting go of those until I can by them electronically.  I’ve had these longer than the Black Stallion books.   The next pile to be attacked is my quilting books.  I know I have a few books that were bought for ONE pattern.  So, I’m going to photocopy that pattern and toss the book in the donation bin.  Oh and don’t get on my about copyright blah blah blah.

What else?  Not much.  I’m proud of myself for not obsessively checking email.  I sent another email to a story source, just a check in make sure he’s still interested in helping me.  I did that on Sunday and I’m not fussing about it.  One small step.  Yeah I need to get back to the writing.  Life is starting to get back to what is “normal” around here so hopefully I’ll be making progress again soon.

A little Spring cleaning

My Spring cleaning fit seems to be coming in small waves this year.  I just went through my box o’ electronic crap and tossed power cords to things I no longer own.  There were audio cables that went to . . . who the hell knows.  There’s the charger for my first mp3 player that’s well leaking (yeah I really need to dispose of this soon).

I sorted clothing patterns and odd scrap of garment fabric about three weeks ago, tossed a big bag of that.  Did you know that NO ONE takes clothing patterns as a donation?  Yeah, I called around to some schools and community groups and you’d think I’d asked them to take the rotting corpse of squirrel or something the way they reacted.

I’ve decided my birthday present this year is going to be a big o’ box of ebooks.  Yeah, funny huh?  Anyway I’ve gone through my to be read pile (non Harlequin books) and sorted them out by which were available via ebooks.  Those are set aside and will be sent off to the library once they start taking donations again.  The big used book sale is this weekend.  First time in a couple of years I haven’t gone, but I didn’t even think about it until sometime late yesterday.  The biggest thing I was always looking for were old Harlequin Blazes.  Most of the back list is available digitally now so eventually my stockpile will be replaced.  Eventually I’ll have the entire catalog of Blazes on my eReader.

How’s the writing going you ask?  Heh.  I’ve stalled a little, mostly because of the distractions of the “oh shiny” whatever it is at the moment.  Later, once it cools off a little I’ll dive back into the work and try to make a dent in my weekly page goal.

Checking in on day 9

I’m plugging away.   Mostly.  I fell away for the last day and a half and as I’ve been trying to get back into it I figured out why.  I’ve hit that point in my manuscript where my research wasn’t right.  Actually I hadn’t done an ounce of research when I started this story way back . . . in November 2008.  Yup, this was my NaNoWriMo story.  I just dove in and wrote.  Then I did some research.

What’s the problem?

Yeah, a large part of this story takes place during rehearsals for an off-Broadway play.  I had most of the scenes occurring in the theatre, except early rehearsals aren’t in the theatre usually.  So I’ve had to move scenes to a rehearsal space which changes the stage direction of these scenes.  It’s slower work that I’d thought and expected.   I’m at the point now where I’ve also had to break scenes and well . . . it’s just more work than I thought.  Most of this re-write was supposed to be filling in and expanding the word count.

No, I’m not going to rant about that, at least not today.   Actually I’m about 500 words from 20,000 words and I’m at 118 pages so it’s all good over here.

I’m thinking about what my weekly reward is going to be.  Yeah, I’ve decided I doing the reward system.  At the end of the first week I treated myself to the latest Shannon McKenna book (an auto buy for me).  I have something in mind, but I’m not sure . . . it’s a reward of a different sort.  Yup, I’m being mysterious again.

Okay, I’m tired.  I’m going to dig up a book and read a little before bed.

Week 1 report

One  week in and this challenge is coming along nicely.  I’ve been writing every day, well except for yesterday I took off as a crafting day.

I’ve decided upon a weekly goal, one that doesn’t depend on word count or new pages.  I want the new manuscript to grow 100 pages every week.  Four weeks, four hundred pages.  If I do this (and I have every expectation of doing it) it means I’ll have doubled my manuscript in a month.  I’ll feel so much better about this project when it’s closer to 400 pages instead of 200 pages.

Not much else to report in really.  It’s gotten cold, which wouldn’t be so annoying if it hadn’t been so damned warm and muggy yesterday.  I’d hoped to write a little in the evening, but what little time I spent outside pulled all the energy right out of me.  So I curled up with a couple of movies instead.

That’s about it, I’m off to get started on my writing for the day.
